Hired a van for the day - good, friendly service, a practically new van and reasonable prices. Great!

I rented a 12 seater mini bus from the Chelmsford branch 19-23rd July.On the 22nd July the mini bus broke down in the Eurotunnel on the way back from France. We managed to push it off the train and get a jump start from the Eurotunnel staff. We got around 20 minutes down the M20, until all of the dashboard lights came on, accelerator power went, and we coasted on to the hard shoulder on the side of the M20 near the Maidstone services around 90 minutes from the Chelmsford depot. As per the instruction of the gentleman who handed me the keys, I phoned the AA (number given on paperwork) to report the problem. They advised there were too many people for recovery to pick up, and that they would send an AA van, and a flat bed.3 hours later, a flat bed turned up (no AA van), and moved us around 5 minutes to the Maidstone services. We had to arrange family members to pick up 4 of the party as they wouldn't fit in the flat bed. 30 minutes later another flatbed arrived and drove us around 40 minutes to thurrock services.We then waited at thurrock services for a further 3 hours for another flatbed to arrive, before eventually arriving back at your Chelmsford depot at around 3am, having reported the break down at 6:15pm. I called Allied first thing Monday morning to explain what had happened and explaining how I understand these things happen, but I am really not happy with the service as we were unable to use the van throughout the whole hire period, couldn't use the van throughout the entire hire period for what we had hired the van for, and family members were hit with costs to pick people up. The gentleman I spoke to was apologetic, but was more worried about the AA not actually investigating the problem with the van, than Sunday's ordeal. I asked to speak to the manager, and was told he would be calling me back. Having called Allied every day for 5 days since then, I am still yet to receive a call back. I have tried ringing on multiple occasions and just get stuck listening to your advertising hold messages, which is quite frustrating. I understand these things happen, but a little bit of customer service goes a long way. With that in mind, I will not be using Allied again, and will instead choose to use a more reputable hire service in the future.
Great service, rented for 7 days to move to France. Vehicle was average condition and could have used a clean inside but more than up to the job and pretty much standard for a rental lorry anyway.Booking, collection and return couldnt have been easier and staff were friendly. Price was very keen, less than half the price I had been quoted local to me!!
